The One That Got Away

She is a sight that I can never forget, even if I tried.

Despite the number of years that had passed, she still wore the same red scarf, auburn curls, and cheeky smile. A familiar shiver travelled down my spine, causing the thin hairs on my forearms and the nape of my neck to rise.

As she bounced on her heels and waited patiently for her coffee, all those wonderful memories of our short time together flashed through my mind.

Late night walks across the campus. Drinking spirits on the sofa. Heartfelt conversations in the nearby forest. Private study sessions. Side glances when we thought the other was not looking…

There are some subtle differences that distinguished this woman from the girl that I knew when I was 19. She stood taller and was no longer fiddling with the ends of her hair, she was slightly tanner meaning she had just come back from a holiday and lastly, she was wearing a silver ring on her left hand.

A pang of regret hit slammed against my chest, probably stronger than I should be feeling. She really was a different person now. Giving her another look over, I realised that this beautiful woman reflected the person that I once was…someone who didn’t take a chance.

As she strolls past my table, every inch of my mind urges me to get up and say something, but my body locks into place. My throat tightens and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.

What good would it do seven years later?

As she disappears for the second time in life, I am left with a cold slice of cake and the fantasy of what could have been.
