5 Easy Ways to Save Money

There’s never a wrong time to start saving money, whether it is for a holiday, a rainy day, or an upcoming splurge day. This article reveals the best ways for keeping your hard-earned money in your account with minimal consequences on your day-to-day living.

Cook Once, Eat Twice

Make your money last longer with batch cooking.

If you plan ahead to make a larger quantity of one meal, you will save money on the cost of cooking with different ingredients and the electricity used to create the other dinners. Purchasing your ingredients for bigger meals often means you will have a greater chance of claiming deals and discounts at supermarkets.

You can choose between storing your leftovers to eat later in the day or bring them to work or freeze them for another time. Also, when you already have delicious and nutritious meals prepared, you’ll have less of an urge to order a takeaway or go out for a meal.

Honey

Get the most value from your online shopping with this browser extension.

By creating an account with Honey, you will instantly unlock access to thousands of promo codes and deals. Once you reach the checkout page of an e-commerce website, a white box will appear which will test the eligibility of several promotions with your shopping cart. And it does not stop until you have reached the lowest possible price.

This service is completely free to use and available on 30,000+ sites. Some of the stores that accept Honey are ASOS, SheIn UK, Moonpig, J.Crew, Ultra Beauty, Sephora, and more.

Buy Basic Store-Brand Versions

Resist the temptation of selecting the nicer-packaged items, and instead, look for the generic and store brands.

Kitchen staples, such as rice, bread, and milk should be inexpensive as they taste exactly the same as those from well-known and heavily marketed companies. It may not seem like a huge change at first, but compare the new price to previous shopping trips and you’ll see that it all adds up.

Other items that you could slash the costs of are painkillers and hayfever tablets. Just be certain that the active ingredient (and its amount) and the effects are identical. But if you have any allergies, double-check the inactive ingredients too to avoid problems.

Tip: Big weekend hauls are more effective than unlimited, shorter trips to express shops.

Click and Collect

While having packages delivered to your home or place of work is a great convenience, it usually comes with the burden of an added fee.

Many online and land-based retailers offer a Click and Collect service and you can use this to your advantage for dodging postage and packing prices. On occasion, this approach is beneficial when you want your order asap because shops can provide as soon as same-day pick-up. There are no limitations and this can be organised for orders of any size.

Popular stores which cater to free collections are Debenhams, River Island, MenKind, Next, The Works, and more.

Save £10 a week

Create a sizeable savings pot by putting away a tenner for 52 weeks.

Here are a few examples that you can cut down each week which are equivalent to £10:

  • 10-can pack of Strongbow Cider
  • 3 Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Tubs
  • 1 Lunch Bundle from Starbucks

Treat it like another bill and set up a standing order to a separate account that you will not touch, then when next year comes, you will find that it has accumulated £520.

If you’re looking to acquire a bigger amount, then you can extend the time i.e. two years is £1,040, three years is £1,560, etc.

  1. We don’t get Ben & Jerry’s over here, and there’s no Starbucks in my town… so I guess I’m saving, right? 😛

  2. All of these are great ideas. One of the things I recommend is either finding or making a tool to help you track and categorize your expenditures. It’s especially helpful with things like subscription services that can drop out of mind until that renewal charge hits.

    • That is so true! Do not rule out products which are not designer branded or branded by big companies 😋 Sometimes you pay more for the “name” than the high quality. Thank you for your thoughtful addition, I appreciate it! Hope you are well and having a lovely week 💕

  3. I’m always looking for new ways to save money. Cooking once and eating twice is such a good idea. I am guilty of ordering takeaway out of sheer laziness, so this would be a great idea for me!

I love honey; it is so easy to use and has saved me a bit of money while I’ve had it.

The click and collect tip is so useful, as I discovered this during Lockdown. Sometimes delivery fees can be upwards of £4.99 instead of simply walking to pick it up at certain locations.

    • Hi The Yorkshire Dreamer! ♡

Thank you for reading this post and for leaving your comment and thoughts – it was a joy to read! 😊 I’m so happy to hear that you find these ideas helpful and have used them too!

Saying “Not this time” to takeout is hard and I relate to the struggle 😂 And personally, I prefer click and collect places/stores over home delivery as the fees can be as high as you describe. It is a huge difference during busy shopping periods like Christmas where prices and demand of goods and next day delivery spikes. I find that usually click and collect is available the next day.

Hope you are well and have a great weekend ahead! 💪🤩

      • Thank you for your lovely response! The struggle with a takeaway is still ongoing, but it is vastly better than it once was. Pre-planned meals have been so beneficial in that.

I try to do Christmas shopping way before Christmas just to avoid inflating costs and outrageous delivery costs. 😁
