Daily Prompt #10

What are your top ten favourite movies?

Here are the top 10 films that I cannot resist watching whenever it is on TV or available on a streaming service:

  1. The Devil Wears Prada (2006) – Such a memorable and entertaining film. I love the power and elegance that Miranda Priestly holds without raising her voice, her one-liners (as well as Emily and Nigel’s), and the fashion is breathtaking. This October in London, The Devil Wears Prada Musical is debuting, and the ever-gorgeous and talented Vanessa Williams is performing as Miranda Priestly. Simply put, I am looking forward to it! šŸ˜
  2. Tick Tick…Boom! (2021) – One of my most recent favourite musicals. It is an autobiography of playwright Jonathan Larson (the creator of Rent), directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. I always sing along to the songs “Johnny Can’t Decide”, “Come To Your Senses” and “Louder Than Words” whenever they play on Spotify.
  3. Rush Hour (1998 – 2007) – I’m cheating a little here because I’m including the whole trilogy as “one movie”. But I love the unseriousness and nonstop banter between Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker’s characters, Lee and Carter, as well as the situations they get themselves into. The humour is quite tongue-in-cheek which never fails to make me facepalm and laugh at the same time.
  4. Forrest Gump (1994) – An inspirational and timeless classic. The way that Forrest Gump’s presence is woven into different aspects of history and culture is truly entertaining and remarkable. I cannot help but laugh and cry while following Forrest’s life and all the obstacles he overcomes. His nonstop positivity and kindness to everyone he meets is to be admired.
  5. Shrek (2001) – Admittedly, I am watching this film while writing this daily prompt and I had forgotten how much I enjoy it šŸ˜‚ To also remind you, Shrek has a killer soundtrack and hilarious fairytale and pop culture references, from the three little pigs to the House of Flying Daggers and more. But above all, it is a great story about friendship and not judging a book (or ogre) by its cover.
  6. Parasite (2019) – Just recently watched this movie again on Netflix, and the symbolism of life between social classes is truly a masterpiece. For example, an evening of heavy rain was a blessing for the Park family as it cleared the sky creating the perfect opportunity for a birthday garden party, whereas the Kim family’s home was flooded and damaged by sewer water as they live in a semi-basement flat. There’s so much to this Oscar-winning film that I learn something new with each rewatch.
  7. Beetlejuice (1988) – Words cannot describe how excited I am to watch Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)! Tim Burton is a living genius of dark fantasy horror comedies šŸ™‡ā€ā™€ļø Beetlejuice is the most crude and rude freelance “bio-exorcist”, and I bloody love it. Also, the movie features a super fun soundtrack.
  8. Marley & Me (2008) – Based on the memoir of the same name, this is a brilliant adaptation of chaos, loyalty and unconditional love from a key family member, Marley – a Labrador retriever. The movie also tackles the theme of seizing the moment and getting older which we see with Marley, and his owners, John and Jenny as they expand their family and progress in their careers.
  9. Father of the Bride (1991) – Like Rush Hour, I am also including this mention and its sequel (which is creatively titled ‘Father of the Bride Part II’ (1995)) as “one movie”. Both are such feel-good romantic-comedies which follows George Banks and his shenanigans leading up to his daughters wedding, the birth of his first grandchild, and more. Lastly, I cannot praise this film without mentioning the legend that is Franck!
  10. Pirates of the Caribbean – Epic sword-fighting scenes. Orlando Bloom. Music by Hans Zimmer. “This is the day you will always remember as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow.” Do I really need to say any more? šŸ™Œ
